Welcome to the ABI
The Arnold Bergstraesser Institute is an independent, non-profit institute for social research. Since it was founded in 1960, the institute has conducted research into the society, culture and politics of countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East, focusing in particular on comparative analysis of development issues.
The Institute favours a synoptic approach that combines basic scientific research, applied development research, and the training and further education of development-work assistants and managers in scientific and practical work on, in and with developing countries, including consultancy services.
Since 2008 the ABI has been an affiliated institute of the University of Freiburg.
The Arnold Bergstraesser Institute houses one of the largest specialised libraries in Germany on Third World research. The reference library is open to the public on weekdays. Its catalogue is available online.
The Institute ist editing the International Quarterly for Asian Studies.
