Lecture on International Developments: Renewable Energies, Renewed Authoritarianism?

Plakat zur Vortragsreihe „Zertifikat Nachhaltigkeit"

In the interdisciplinary sustainability lecture series, Benjamin Schütze delivers a presentation on international developments, shedding light on the question "Renewable Energies, Renewed Authoritarianism?".

The focus of the investigation is on how politics influences the expansion of solar energy in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) and to what extent this reshapes established authoritarian practices. Countries throughout the MENA region are pursuing ambitious goals for transitioning from fossil fuels to renewable energies. Despite marking a crucial turning point, the political economy of the region continues to be predominantly analyzed through the lens of fossil fuels and state-centric approaches.

The lecture will take place on January 10th in Lecture Hall 1221 in KG1 at the University of Freiburg.
