Spaces of refuge as ‘extended battlefields’
ABI's staff member Anas Ansar examines the connections between increasing violence in Rohingya refugee camps and the escalating war in Myanmar's Rakhine region in a blog post at XCEPT:
Gender-based violence and insecurity have increased over the past year in the refugee camps in Bangladesh, which are home to over a million Rohingya who have fled Myanmar. There is a clear connection between this increase in violence in the camps and the escalation of the war in Myanmar's Rakhine region. What dimensions of gender-based violence do the Rohingya experience and how do the women and men affected deal with it?
Anas Ansar, Benjamin Etzold and Syeda Rozana Rashid summarize key findings from recent research funded by the UK's Cross-Border Conflict Evidence, Policy and Trends (XCEPT) research program, highlighting in particular cross-border dynamics and new forms of violence against men.
