Andreas Mehler, Director of the ABI, shares his expertise on the political situation in Cameroon in an interview with the Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland (RND), particularly with regard to the candidacy of long-time President Paul Biya in the presidential elections.

Presidential elections were held in Cameroon on 12 October. Cameroon's incumbent president, Paul Biya, stood for re-election. At 92, he is the world's oldest head of state in a country where the median age is 17.5.

In an interview, Andreas Mehler describes how neither its wealth of resources nor its geographical location have benefited the Central African country under the authoritarian presidency of Biya. According to Mehler, the country has also been pursuing a ‘zigzag course’ in foreign policy for decades. Overall, the freedom of the elections in Cameroon is questionable: ‘The official figures that will be announced at the end will once again not be very credible. [...] I don't think you have to be a prophet to assume that Biya's successor will not be decided at the ballot box.’
