Will the war in Sudan spread to Chad?
Chad is increasingly affected by the situation in neighboring Sudan. In an interview with Frankfurter Rundschau, ABI associate and Chad expert Helga Dickow reports that the country is already in a state of crisis.
She states that the current situation is looking grim, especially because the political opposition is continuously pressured under President Déby. "What little remained of the political opposition in the country has been killed or detained," says Dickow. Additionally, poverty is increasing: "Many people cannot even afford two meals a day."
Débys attempts to forge closer ties with the United Arab Emirates, reflected in recent regulations on the use of languages, have also not been well received in the predominantly Christian south of Chad. However, a certain degree of rapprochement with France is not out of the picture yet, following a recent visit by Déby to Paris. It remains unclear what all this will mean for the local population.
