The war in Sudan also affects its neighboring countries

In an interview with KNA at the Evangelische Zeitung, ABI associate Helga Dickow highlights the consequences of the war in Darfur for Chad.

Refugees from Darfur have been part of everyday life in eastern Chad for decades. However, Dickow considers the current developments since the outbreak of war in Sudan 2023 to be worrying – also for Chad: "There is great concern that the conflicts between the various ethnic groups will spread to Chad. After all, the groups also live here. Conflicts could flare up, especially among young people." The civil war in Chad began in 1979 with conflicts between students, and these memories continue to have an impact today, according to Dickow. In addition, the population is increasingly frustrated under the authoritarian rule of Mahamat Déby – potentially a fertile ground for conflict.
