The end of an era?

In the latest issue of iz3w magazine, Andreas Mehler, Director of ABI, sheds light on the current political situation in Cameroon, which is on the eve of presidential elections.

In October, Cameroon's 92-year-old president Paul Biya will stand for re-election. For decades, he has been tailoring the political system to suit his presidency. The Central African country receives little media attention in Germany, although it is the largest economy in the Central African Franc zone – and also a former German colony.

Andreas Mehler examines the current situation and highlights issues of succession, opposition, manipulation, and conflicts in relation to the elections. At the same time, he places the events in a broader historical and political context. His conclusion: “Nervousness is increasing shortly before the elections,” but it will be difficult to achieve structural change.
