On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the partnership between Baden-Württemberg and Burundi, a discussion event was held on November 18, 2024 at the University of Freiburg on the topic: “Global Partnerships - Challenges and Perspectives for Universities and Civil Society.”

In their contributions, Vice-Rector Melanie Arndt (University of Freiburg) and MdL Saint-Cast (Freiburg) emphasized the need to focus more on the Global South in internationalization. State Secretary Hoogvliet pointed out that it is important to define both individual and common interests in partnerships. Successful examples, but also difficulties of global partnerships were discussed in a panel discussion.

The event, organized by the Arnold Bergstraesser Institute, the Africa Centre for Transregional Research and the Global Partnerships Network, was attended by around 70 people on site, with many more - including in the partner country Burundi - following the livestream. The event was part of a series of events to mark the 40th anniversary of the Baden-Württemberg-Burundi partnership.
