Andreas Mehler accompanied a delegation of Maka on their visit to the University of Freiburg. This radio program at Südnordfunk by iz3w discusses the visit and Germany's colonial past:
The Maka are demanding the repatriation of their ancestors, whose remains have been part of the Alexander Eckert Collection for more than a hundred years. The collection is located at the University of Freiburg. The skulls are Maka-ancestors, who have been killed during the German colonial aggression in Cameroon.
His Majesty Bertrand Efoudou the Third, heir to the throne of the great Maka chiefdom and head of the delegation, German scholar Dr. Richard Tsogang Fossi, the delegation's scientific advisor, and Heiko Wegmann from Freiburg postkolonial report on the Maka's visit to Freiburg. The aim now is to nurture new relationships, starting with the repatriation of the ancestors. This is the only way for the executed to regain their lost dignity and humanity. At the same time, the city of Freiburg and the university are responsible for addressing their colonial past.
