Jopson, Dr. Teresa / Lena Diakite (2025): „Performing control in Southeast Asia’s drug wars“, in: Peter Drysdale (Hg.), East Asia Forum.
Kurze Beschreibung / Abstract:
Southeast Asia’s wars on drugs reflect authoritarian populism and performative border control. Populist policies bolster leaders’ political careers while harming vulnerable communities such as migrant workers and minorities, even as the illicit economy endures. Hardline enforcement across the region perpetuates violence, extrajudicial killings and social vulnerabilities. A holistic and intersectional approach to drug policy is needed to address the root causes of drug trafficking and better protect marginalised groups.
