Taking a transnational lens and bringing a global South perspective, this chapter unpacks the drivers, characteristics, variations and responses associated with the Rohingya’s onward migration to India and Malaysia. The Rohingya’s onward journeys to, and experiences in, India and Malaysia are mediated through and constituted by their experiences in the first country of asylum—Bangladesh. Drawing on recent empirical research in Malaysia and India, we provide a granular overview of how livelihood opportunities, cross-border commercial migration infrastructures, established labour corridors and multi-faceted aspirations intersect with historical patterns of Rohingya displacement in both countries. It shows how the changing stance of government and civil society, as well as growing public resentment against the Rohingya, affect onward migration and generate forms of onward precarity. In doing so, we also trace how religion and racial discourses are increasingly taking precedence in both countries, further affecting labour dependencies, displacement dynamics, forced relocation and the normalisation of totalitarian refugee governance.
