Webinar: Political Displacement of Brazilian Construction Industrials in the 2010s: From National Corporatism to the Consolidation State

Political Scientist Hugo Fanton will present his paper on the Brazilian class conflicts during 2010s based on the disputes for the urban development. The hypothesis is that, during this period, there was a gradual displacement in the political stance of industrials- an important social basis of the developmentalist program adopted by Lula and Rousseff’s governments (2003-2016)-, from a national corporatist attempt to the defense of the “Consolidation State” under Bolsonaro government. The distributive and redistributive conflicts between workers and businesspeople, combined with the advance of the financialization of the construction sector and public policies, have produced a realignment of the Brazilian industrials with austerity measures and their defense of historical patterns of labor overexploitation.

Emilio Distretti (History and Theory of Architecture and Urbanism) will discuss this paper.
