Thailand has been through turbulent years. The pandemic was accompanied by heavy protests against the monarchy and the government in 2020. After a hard lockdown in 2021, Thailand abandoned its zero-Covid strategy and has been opening the country ever since. With the tourism, the hope for a better future returns. At the same time, the recovery is hindered by soaring prices for resources and food. Where does the country stand in the last year of the government led by PM Prayut? How does the country view the war in Ukraine and in Myanmar?

Mexico has seen a dramatic escalation in violence during the last decade. We have all heard of so-called cartels, shoot-outs between state and criminal forces in some cities, but also cooperation between police and organized crime. But what if we look beyond the graphic depictions and simple stories of crime, and connect violence in cities in the past and present?

Anti-Black sentiments have always been part of the linguistics map of the Americas for over 600 years. In the lecture, Onookome Okome will briefly investigate the cultural history of this linguistic violence. To do this, he will also draw on the works of three major European authors, which will allow him to show patterns in the use of linguistic violence against black bodies in historical and political perspective.

Der Vortrag präsentiert eine Reihe von Initiativen und Forschungen, die sich in den letzten Jahrzehnten mit diesem "kolonialen Erbe" des französischen Hochschulssystems befassten, und diskutiert die Schwierigkeiten, welche die Aufarbeitung dieses Kapitels der französischen Bildungsgeschichte noch heute bereitet.

Not least since the European “refugee crisis” in 2015, there has been a lot of focus in newspapers and discussions on African migration to Europe, the live of African migrants in Europe and to some extent their journeys coming here. The understanding of African migration is overtly simplified, stripped from all nuances and near-exclusively put into a negative light. In this roundtable discussion, three African scholars will discuss their work in migration research, their positionality, contemporary debates in academia and society as well as what a more nuanced understanding of African migration could mean for a better relationship between the two continents.

This lecture by Sabelo Ndlovu-Gatsheni (Bayreuth) shows how African Studies became imbricated in global imperial designs and at the same time deploying the concept of decolonial intellectual turns to map out the key moments in academic resistance to the cognitive empire and how this shaped African Studies from an Africa vantage point.

The DAAD Summer School "Contested Governance" offers DAAD scholarship holders in countries of the global South an intensive two-week program from September 13th to October 1st 2021 with the thematic focus on "Governance" and its multiple challenges. The Summer School is organized by ABI and financed by DAAD.

In the webinar, Julia Gurol presents her paper in which she deconstructs Sino-Emirati relations in the field of digital surveillance. Inspired by Social Network Theory, she explores three transregional public-private elite networks as multipliers for the travelling of authoritarian practices. She shows that authoritarian diffusion under the umbrella of fighting the pandemic is not spatially bound to geopolitical proximity or other structural similarities, but rather a global phenomenon that is reproduced by state and non-state actors.

Enrique Martino (History and Anthropology) will present his paper placing the surge of cryptocurrencies and its receptive adaptation within the historical political economy of decentralized and multiple currencies in West African history. Political Scientist Hugo Fanton will present his paper on the Brazilian class conflicts during 2010s based on the disputes for the urban development.The hypothesis is that, during this period, there was a gradual displacement in the political stance of industrials - an important social basis of the developmentalist program adopted by Lula and Rousseff’s governments (2003-2016) -, from a national corporatist attempt to the defense of the “Consolidation State” under Bolsonaro government.

Orientalist Leila Samadi Rendy will present her paper on space and gender in the novels of Iranian women in the 21st century. The case study of her research includes the most significant novels of Iranian female writers of the 21st century, which have rarely been studied theoretically.
