The Freiburg Migration Forum provides a platform for the exchange of ideas and perspectives on migration and integration by giving both researchers and representatives of local organizations and authorities the opportunity to discuss their work and encourage the exchange between politics and science.

The first meeting is dedicated to the topic of participatory methods in (Forced) Migration Studies and is organized by the Catholic University Freiburg in cooperation with the Arnold Bergstraesser Institute.

Program:

14:30 - 14:45 - Welcome and introduction: Why use participatory research methods? (Franzisca Zanker and Nausikaa Schirilla)
14:45 - 15:15 - Participatory research on women's experiences of migration and discrimination (Myriam Alvarez, Birgit Heidtke, Nausikaa Schirilla)

From 2019-2024, two research and development projects on women's experiences of migration and discrimination were carried out at the Catholic University Freiburg in cooperation with the Feminist History Workshop Freiburg. Our contribution focuses on the participatory research methods in the BMBF-funded oral history project IDEA and the project Speak out! Against Racism and Sexism, funded by the federal program "Demokratie leben!", with a view to our experiences and the results of the research processes.

15:15 - 15:45 - Discussion
15:45 - 16:00 - Outlook - Planned participatory research in African Migration Studies (Franzisca Zanker)

The new project “The Political Lives of Migrants: Perspectives from Africa” at the ABI examines the political agency of migrants from the perspective of the Global South. The planned participatory methods include diaries and theater workshops.
