Lesson Materials Relating to Colonialism and Genocide

The German-Namibian Commission for Extracurricular Lesson Materials Relating to Colonialism and Genocide met at the Arnold Bergstraesser Institute in Freiburg (Germany) for the first time from 19 to 25 July. Part of the wider Namibia initiative initiated and financed by the State of Baden Württemberg, the cooperation project was set up following the 2019 restitution to Namibia, of the Hendrik Witbooi Bible and whip previously held in the Lindenmuseum in Stuttgart. This initiative seeks to establish a permanent relationship between Germany and the Namibian government. In addition to its working sessions, the commission also interacted with a range of institutions and discussed current issues of German-Namibian relations with researchers from the Arnold Bergstraesser Institute. Discussions focussed on the connection between the current COVID-19 pandemic and the genocide in Namibia and the level of acceptance of the recent German-Namibian reconciliation agreement.
