The Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts Baden-Württemberg has handed over human remains (Iwi Kūpuna, ancestors) from colonial times to a delegation from Hawaii. Of these, 13 Iwi Kūpuna were in the Alexander Ecker Collection of the University of Freiburg.

The University was represented by Prof. Dr. Andreas Mehler, Director of the ABI. In the run-up, he had organised the participation of African scholars from a wide range of disciplines in the Freiburg provenance research. "So far, there is hardly any empirical data on such a transdisciplinary as well as intercultural approach", says Mehler.
