In the context of the annual general meeting, the Arnold-Bergstraesser-Institut bid farewell to Prof. Dr. Heribert Weiland from the board of the institute on June 14, 2023. Initially as a research assistant, later as managing director, director, and board member of the supporting association, Heribert Weiland was one of the defining figures at the Arnold-Bergstraesser-Institut for decades.

In addition to his work on education systems in Africa, Heribert Weiland's scientific interest was primarily focused on South Africa and Namibia. On the occasion of his farewell, members of the supporting association and the institute gathered for a scientific colloquium. The presentations on Southern Africa covered a wide range of topics, from historical to current issues in the region.

Adhering to the principle established by the institute's founder, Arnold Bergstraesser, of always linking science with practical policy consulting, Heribert Weiland conducted numerous studies and expert opinions in the field of development cooperation. As an honorary professor at the University of Freiburg, he also familiarized generations of students with the field of development policy.

In his laudatory speech, Prof. Karl Schmitt particularly emphasized the merits of Heribert Weiland in helping build and sustain the institute with great dedication over the decades. Through his cheerful nature and human leadership style, he made ABI a place that employees and visiting scholars fondly remember.

The supporting association and the staff warmly thank Heribert Weiland and wish him all the best.
