Project launch Hierarchies

The BMBF-network “Postcolonial Hierarchies in Peace and Conflict” (Hierarchies) will be launched in the context of this year’s conference of the Association for African Studies in Germany (VAD) titled “Africa-Europe: Reciprocal Perspectives,” which is hosted by the Africa Centre for Transregional Research (ACT) of the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg. In this context, Hierarchies will host the roundtable titled:

“Global hierarchies and reciprocity in academic knowledge production -
A decolonial approach to peace and conflict studies.”

Special guests include Koen Vlassenroet, Karen Büscher and Josaphat Musamba Bussy, from Ghent University, who are active participants in “The Bukavu Series” — a collaborative format that discusses epistemic and ethical issues that arise from diverse and unequal positions between scholars conducting research in conflict sites. The roundtable will further feature interventions by Emery Mudinga from the Angaza Institute, based in Bukavu, Democratic Republic of Congo, by Azza Ahmed, from the Institute for Humanities in Africa, University of Cape Town, and by Jana Hönke, who is part of the Hierarchies network on behalf of the University of Bayreuth. The roundtable will be chaired by Fabricio Rodríguez, from ABI Freiburg, Hierarchies network.

This event will take place on Wednesday, 8 June 2022 at 11-12.30h at the University of Freiburg (KG I, 1009), followed by a modest reception (Apéro) for panel discussants and attendees.

Hierarchies is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research of Germany (BMBF). It is a collaborative network between the Arnold Bergstraesser Institute (ABI) Freiburg, the Center for Conflict Studies at the Philipps University Marburg, the University of Bayreuth and the University of Erfurt. The network investigates how historically formed postcolonial hierarchies manifest themselves in contemporary conflict dynamics and what implications this has for sustainable conflict transformation. The project seeks to create dialogic platforms for scholars and partner institutions from the Global North and Global South to address these questions in collaborative formats.
